Electric Reliability Counsel of Texas

www.ercot.com  ERCOT is one of 10 Regional Reliability Councils in the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) Organization. ERCOT represents a bulk electric system located totally within the State of Texas and serves about 85% of Texas’s electrical load. It has a generating capability of about 65,000 Megawatts and experienced a 2000 summer peak demand of about 57,606 Megawatts. Because of its intrastate status, the primary regulatory authority for ERCOT utilities is the PUCT. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission exercises limited authority. ERCOT membership currently consists of Retail Consumers, six Cooperatives and River Authorities, six Municipals owning generation or transmission, four Investor Owned Utilities, thirteen Independent Power Producers, twenty-three Power Marketers and fourteen Transmission Dependent Utilities.

North American Electric Reliability Counsel

www.nerc.com  On November 9, 1965 a blackout left 30 million people across the Northeastern United States and Ontario, Canada without power. In an effort to prevent this type of blackout from ever happening again, electric utilities formed the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) in 1968 to promote the reliability of the electricity supply for North America.  Since its formation, NERC has operated as a voluntary organization - one dependent on reciprocity and mutual self-interest of all those involved. With the continued growth of competition and the structural changes taking place in the industry, incentives and responsibilities are changing, making it necessary for NERC to transform from a voluntary system of reliability management to one that is mandatory, with the backing and support of U.S. and Canadian governments.  The mission of the new NAERO (North American Electric Reliability Organization), NERC's successor organization, will be to develop, promote, and enforce standards for a reliable North American bulk electric system.
